Let me offer a 20 year view of data value in construction. Keep in mind that building owners have the most to gain from this effort. The AEC community is now seeing this.

This is an interesting concept. On first glance, who would question this idea. Dive a little deeper, and think about the owner’s needs. Does the owner benefit in an exchange of information? If this exchange is open to all participants, how is this information vetted for use by the owner. The owners, the folks who pay for all these interesting concepts, must receive value for our work.

We can do both. At the end of construction, the only thing the owner cares about is the end product, not the process employed. The building information that is turned over to the owner must be accurate, usable, and accessible. No software and no cloud can come between the owner and their information. We have all learned by now that CD’s are merely another form of paper. The owner needs a searchable, verified and audited set of building information files.
